Each society defines different roles and duties to its people. Societies, although with a dynamic structure, desires individuals to play their roles perfectly. These roles vary in each society, at different times, at different levels.

As social structure(s) are dynamic and open to changes, the social system and judgmental values on women’s role(s) and place(s) and their participation change through time. In this context, gendered roles and values may turn quite significant determinants.

GÜKAM (University of Giresun Gender Studies Research Center) conducts, supports and coordinates researches and actions on problems that women encounter in various fields of everyday life such as violence, professional life, politics or access to education.

As a young and dynamic Research Centre, we have been conducting studies on the field of gender equality both on regional and international levels over the last two years. We held our First International Gender Symposium and Art Workshop last year, in 2013, with the support of the UN and the UNESCO. 45 scientists from 17 countries joined.

In order to stand against discrimination and advocate for fundamental rights such as equal access to education, health, professional life and so, GÜKAM is going to hold its Second International Gender Symposium and Art Workshop from May 8th to May 10th 2014.

The topic of this year’s symposium has been defined as “Women Participation in Social and Political Life”. It focuses on the ‘macro’ level of socio-political institutions, and the degree of agency – of political rights – that have been acquired there.
